Abstract

In today’s world, where communication through mobile devices has become common, research on mobile media as a means of emotional expression and regulation can contribute to mental health promotion. This study explores different types of encouraging messages and motivations individuals want to receive through mobile media when experiencing negative moods, focusing on differences based on mood states and gender. Our results showed that participants experiencing anger or anxiety tended to seek consolation that their mood would soon improve. In contrast, participants feeling sadness or self-harm preferred messages that acknowledged their existence and value and encouraged them that things would improve. Additionally, male participants preferred messages recognizing their abilities and value, while female participants desired more messages of empathy and consolation. These findings provide a foundation for developing personalized encouragement messages through mobile media, enhancing emotional regulation strategies tailored to individual mood states and gender.
